Free on Amazon for a limited time!
A new children's picture book hit Amazon's cyber shelves and the amazing rich illustrations in it were all shot in Second Life. Some of you may recognize the arcade and areas surrounding. The story, called What Did the Cat See? centers around a cat named SilverJinx, (of course ;p) discovering the world she lives in.

Right now it's free on Amazon, and has been up there as one of the top five free cat books on Amazon - often hovering at #2. I'll take that. It's only free for a limited time, so grab your copy now and experience Second Life in a whole new way - sharing it with your kids! Bet you never thought you'd here that one ;p

Evolution of the Avatar

So recently I saw a post on the Second Life Forums from 2011 where people were posting timelines of their avatar from the day they started to today. It was really funny to see all the different faces, we really have come a long way from 2006.

In light of this, I decided to take a trip down memory lane and try to dig up some of my old pictures from early avatar-hood. It was... crazy... to say the least. Here's my 2006-2014 timeline - I can't believe I let myself walk around dressed like I was back in the day.

How far has your avatar come since you first started Second Life?

Carpet... Such a hassle.

So SilverJinx and I are currently working on the new arcade that we'll be putting in over the next month. I'm really excited about the ideas of tickets, games and just plain fun! I'm sort of going on the blacklight theme right now, but if that's too flashy I have some other options picked out.

So which carpet do you like best for the Arcade?

Option A

Option B

Or another carpet entirely? We're sort of going for the retro 80s look if you couldn't already tell.
Let me know in the comments below!

Character Sketches

Some rough sketches for an idea that SilverJinx told me about last night. I won't ruin the surprise... but I will tell you guys it's going to be awesome. I can't wait to get started on this new project of ours.

[Second] Life 2.0 - A Documentary

I just finished a documentary on Second Life called Life 2.0... and honestly I'm a bit surprised. In my opinion, the documentary covered a lot of the darker things that happen in this game but hardly any of the good. With a game modeled after real life, of course there are going to be creepy people or people that make bad decisions. Those people are in real life too, aren't they?

Second Life to me is a beautiful place to explore and create. The boundaries aren't what you can come up with out of your own imagination but what you can design with the combined minds of others. There are places to learn, places to relax, places to meet new people and places to spend time with the people you've met.

I have been to virtual colleges and environmentalist communities, I've battled with pirates on the docks of unknown cities... I've even spent time with real life family, oceans away, that I wouldn't have been able to connect with if it hadn't been for Second Life.

I did enjoy some parts of the documentary when it came to the designer, Asri Falcone. Honestly the first thing that I thought when they started to show her real life house was, "Damn, she has a nice computer setup." - I wish I had three screens and an Asus PC!

It was also neat to see what Linden Labs actually looked like... or at least what it looked like in 2007. (I'm sure it's a lot bigger now)

I believe this documentary earned the three and a half stars that it got on Netflix. It was a decent enough documentary (Besides the skipping around and a few confusing scenes when it came to the stories) but it missed so much of what Second Life was really about. Maybe someone will make an updated documentary one day on what Second Life has grown too... an amazing community of people from all backgrounds, races and countries.

Dwarfins!~

I never really got into the breedables thing. I had a friend who kept Meeroos, but that's about all. Even if my landlord let me keep dozens of tiny animals romping around his sim, I doubt I could keep track of them all. Although if I did keep breedables, I'd definitely have Dwarfins!

I discovered them recently on the marketplace and out of curiosity, went to check out their sim. If you've never been to the Dwarfins sim, let me tell you - it's gorgeous! It reminds me of Ironforge, the Mines of Moria and the enchanted forest combined!

There were so many places to go, so many things to do... I probably spent an hour on the sim (is it only one sim?) just exploring.

If you don't know, Dwarfins are little breedable creatures that build, mine, fish and even garden! While this might sound a bit redundant, Dwarfins finds a way to make it fun. For example while your mining, you might dig up some good stuff like blueprints to build other buildings or rare gems to sell for crafting points. Did I mention they have an entire crafting system set up?

If you're not into breedables, you can even roleplay on the sim as a Dwarfin. They have a bunch of mesh avatars to choose from and the entire sim is set up as a roleplay zone, complete with dragon riding! You can also hunt for gems that are hidden all over the sim to cash in for Dwarfin gifts. I even ran into Snow White and the seven Dwarfins while I was exploring.

Sigh... if only I had some land to keep them on, I would go Dwarfin-Crazy! These little guys are adorable and the creators definitely developed a unique and addicting system. I want to collect all the buildings and Dwarfin traits.

Rain - SL Fashion

I look out my window
and it's raining

I used to think of you
when it rained
and how we
spent our rainy days together

It's funny how memories stay with us
long after that person is gone

Some days
I would miss you
when it rained

Other days
I would miss the time and
how we spent it together

My heart would fill
with sadness and pain

But nowadays
I don't feel any sadness nor pain
when it rains

I don't feel anything at all
It's the same feeling I have for you...

Nothing.

A Day at the Arcade

A few months ago, :Dandi and I opened up an arcade in front of "The Refuge" Club and Shopping District. It was a test really to see if there was any interest in an entire arcade filled with Gacha Machines. If you don't know what Gacha Machines are in Second Life, you're missing out!

We wanted to make a place that was fun for everyone in SL from adults to children, furries to flamers! And it was a hit - We couldn't believe the response we got just in the first couple weeks of opening. I guess everyone wants a place where they can relax, bring a date and play games.

Today I decided I wanted to see what it was like for myself. Sure, I helped build the place but I never really got a chance to really look at what I built. Our Arcade has four rows of Gacha Machines, Lucky Boards, Freebies and of course... arcade games. I probably played Whack-A-Mole for a straight two hours! (That little bugger kept evading me)

I also tried out the Fortune Telling Machine that :Dandi set up a few weeks ago to find out what the future had in store for me.

"A thrilling time is in your immediate future."

I guess we'll have to wait and see what that could mean. If I have any thrilling times in my future, my blog readers will be the first ones to know! If you haven't been to the Song&SilverJinx Arcade yet, you should visit and let us know how we did. A few of the Gacha Machines are still under construction but the games are open for business!

Kagami 2014 - Into the Spirit World

Kagami 2014 is a chilling journey through the experiences of a Japanese school girl who will risk everything to find her friend. It all starts with a rumor going around the school about how if you take two mirrors and face them towards each other at Midnight, it will reveal the face of your future husband.

You, of course, try it out for yourself only to be disappointed when nothing happens. Thinking of how stupid it was for a 15 year old to fall for a stupid gag, you fall asleep only to be awoken by your panicked mother. Your best friend, Kasumi, has gone missing... What happens next will take you on a whirlwind through the looking glass and into the spirit world.

The world in the mirror reminded me a lot of the movie by Hayao Miyazaki, Spirited Away with the style of those old mystery games like "The Longest Journey". You'll encounter everything from foxes in kimonos to faceless men. It wasn't hard to see that a lot of work went into the makings of this Second Life mini-game. The game features a custom hud, unique and creative world built from scratch and even some movie like scenes where you see the story from Kasumi's friend's point of view.

This is a haunting tale that I won't soon forget. If you're planning on seeing it for yourself, then you better do it fast - The event only lasts until the 31st of August.

The Noob Experiment

So recently I was reading an article about how Second Life's biggest downfall is the fact that it's not very new-user friendly. If you've heard about the new version of Second Life that Linden Labs is coming out with then you'll know one of their key aims is to make Second Life easier for "Noobs" to figure out. (While not taking anything away from the more experienced players, of course.)

How hard is it for the average noob to learn how to play this game? It's been years since most of us have been new players to Second Life and back then it was a completely different world. To find out the answer, I had to go back to the beginning... the very beginning. I had to be a noob again.

All of us have probably had our fair share of run-ins with newbies whether you recruited a friend or family member to SL or one was trying to bum lindens or... that other thing off of you. (Girls, you know what I mean.) Because of that, I was familiar with the kind of questions that I usually get asked.

"How do I wear something?"
"Where can I find people to hang out with?"
"How do I get this box off my face?"

You know... the usual.

When I first popped into SL on my new avatar, the first thing I saw was a small gathering of other avatars. Not all of them looked new, in fact one of them was a giant werewolf looking thing!

When did new avatars start getting decent clothing... or mesh for that matter?

I'm sure most people can figure out how to use WASD or the arrow keys on their own so I headed off down the path. I noticed the different land sections were named like instructions.

Find the path...

Cross the bridge...

Escape the island...

After crossing the obstacles (which weren't very difficult) I came across a portal leading to another island. I expected to be walked through different commands along the way, such as how to fly, jump or talk, but nothing ever popped up for me.

This new island also had a few people standing around and immediately I was given a teleport to the "London" sim. I wasn't going to act that noob to take it, but I'm sure that's where a lot of new players end up... confused in random sims.

Welcome New Players, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

I set off to explore this new island which was actually pretty cool. Second Life definitely did a good job designing the place. However, there still wasn't any explanation on how to play the game or where to go next. I did find some free shirts outside "Club SL" but I didn't know how to put on clothing, so I stuck with my Wizard of Oz dress.

After wandering around the island for about 20 minutes, I found some portals that reminded me of the holiday forest in Nightmare Before Christmas.

The portals each had different names of general activities... Art, Wilderness, Roleplay, Social... I picked "Popular" as I wasn't really sure what to even do in Second Life yet. All the portals let you walk right into them to teleport, which was handy considering no one had even taught me how yet.

Woosh! And I was shot off to a place called "Dance Island". Pretty generic... but I guess we can't overwhelm the new people all at once. There were handy arrows that showed me the path to the club. They probably get new people a lot since I imagine "Popular" is a pretty popular portal. *Ba-Dum Tink!*

Inside the club was packed full of people and I definitely felt like an outsider in my newbish dress and hair. I wandered around the club, bumping into people and right clicking on stuff, before deciding to head back to the island to go through a different portal.

The only problem was that there was no way back to that island! The portal that landed me here was a one-way route. Feeling confused and discouraged, I headed back into the club until someone gave me a landmark to "Freebie Dungeon" and sent a short message on how to use it.

Off I go again, but at least now I was getting somewhere. I excitedly started clicking on pictures of clothing I liked and buying it for 0 lindens. Since I didn't know how to wear clothes, I just checked the box "Wear Clothing Now" whenever I'd purchase something I wanted to change into. Before to long my avatar was beginning to look like a real Second Life-ian.

One concern though was that half the clothes I put on from the freebie store wouldn't actually show on my avatar. Only just then did I realize my avatar was completely mesh! Of course a newbie wouldn't even know what mesh is, so the confusion continued. At this point, being unaware of why none of the clothing was working, I could assume a noob would feel very frustrated... and more confused.

I stole the bowling ball from someone's game, but don't you think it matches so well?

Once I had... um... an outfit (or maybe like ten!) I started wandering around the Freebie Dungeon to try and find my way out. After bumping into boxes and people, I glitched my way through a wall at a sim boundary and wound up in some flat plains. Finally - The open road! By this time I had figured out how to fly and was zooming all over the place until... KICK! And back I landed in the freebie dungeon. (Good thing there is security systems designed to babysit noobs.)

After about thirty to forty-five minutes of running in circles and sliding around from lag, someone offered to help me.

Well, maybe I asked him for help but it was still sweet of him. He began asking me questions about what color hair I would like, my eye color and other traits my online self would have. After I few minutes he sent me a folder and walked me through how to use the "Replace Current Outfit" option and then detach a second hair that was thrown in there by accident.

To keep up the disguise I had to speak noob-talk.

The result... much, much better and just like that I wasn't feeling so noobish anymore. He also gave me a folder full of teleports to interesting places and places to go freebie shopping. I was surprised that the folder he gave me even came complete with an AO!

Perhaps there is some truth to the fact that SL could be more newbie friendly. If I really was a noob I would definitely have felt a lot of confusion. There is some comfort, though, in knowing that no matter what there will always be friendly players around to give you a helping hand. The people that play this game are truly what makes Second Life so unique. As a more experienced player, it's our duty in a way to offer knowledge and guidance to the confused populace of tutorial island that we encounter.

After all, we were all noobs at one time.
